Why The World Needs Heroes...
When was the first time you saw a man fly? Whether it was on television, in a comicbook, or on the streets of Metropolis? When was the first time that you saw a man stop an runaway train with brute strength alone, or speed to the rescue of a helpless victim, or battle a seemingly unstoppable evil, even when you felt in your heart that all hope was lost? When was the first time you saw a man save the world?
These images inspired the imagination and heightened the spirit. These were our heroes. They reminded us, as a people, never to give up hope. They reminded us never to let our fears control us; Never to give in or back down from injustice, even when the odds are against us. Our heroes captured our hearts and minds, and left us with stories that we will tell for generations to come.
Their recent disappearance reminds us of what we've gained from them, but also of what we've lost. These heroes: Superman, the Flash, Wonder Woman, the Green Lantern, and too many others seemingly gave their lives to stop one more in long succession of threats, not only to our planet, but to the entire Universe. But for a time that seemed too brief, they made our world a better place than it was--than it could otherwise have been.
Our heroes gave us everything and more. But they weren't our heroes simply because of what they could do, no matter how powerful they were. They were our heroes because of who they were, and what they stood for. They were our heroes because of what they did with the power they had. With their courage; their fortitude, they never settled for the easy path. They made the hard choices, and they did everything that they could to help those who couldn't help themselves.
The world needs its heroes: People to inspire us, people to defend us, people to give us hope. The world needs people with the courage to remind us that even after recent events, there are some things that are still worth fighting for, now more than ever. And the world will always have them.
There's a hero in all of us. It's the part of us that gives us the strength to go on in the face of adversity. It's what drives us to do what's right; not what's easy. It's our conscience, our moral compass, and our empathy. It doesn't take super powers to be a hero. It takes strength--and not just the physical kind. Because of this, we can know that there will be new heroes. Who they are, or what shape they'll take is a mystery. But they will come.
And in this brave new world, the New Heroes will be tested to the peak of their endurance and face challenges and responsibilities that should never have been theirs to face.
But they won't have to do it alone.
Though the world's greatest heroes may be gone, they'll always be with us in a way: Watching over us. Protecting us. Showing us everything that we can be and reminding us of what's worth fighting for. The New Heroes may come, but one day you may look up in the sky and see something else moving across the horizon. You may not be sure if it's a bird, or a plane, until you realize that it's Superman.
Superman will always be with us, in our hearts and imaginations, if we only look hard enough.
The twist of the New Heroes is that some time ago, most of the major superheroes in the DC Universe died in a glorious outer space battle to save the planet. Superman, Wonder Woman, the Green Lanterns and more - all gone. Some heroes who couldn't go into space, like Batman or Huntress, remain, but most heroes are gone.
That's where you come in. We want you to design and play your own superheroes. Create one from scratch or take over a classic DC legacy. You can even play one of the surviving canon characters if you want. The choice is yours. So come on in, join our game and have some fun!
