Up until mere months ago the world had been at relative peace, mutants and humans walked the streets side by side without fighting. For three years the X-Men and Brotherhood teams had been no more, the rivalry dead. The nearby sentinels made sure of that. Professor Xavier and Magneto worked together for a common goal, living out the remainder of their lives on Genosha. But to learn how this came to be, you must know the whole story.
Three years ago Senator Robert E. Kelly convinced congress to pass the Mutant Registration Act, and by slim majority, it passed. The mutant outcry and riots in the streets only furthered Senator Kelly’s point that the law was needed in order to protect the humans. The law said that mutants could only use their powers on privately owned property with the consent of the owner. It also forced mutants to register their powers and aliases. Upon it’s passing, Project Wideawake was made active, unleashing the sentinel program on the country.
The Brotherhood were the first mutants to be captured and made examples of for openly using their powers. Those mutants now sit in cells at Neverland, a concentration camp for mutants. Utilizing power inhibiting collars, the mutants are put to work there, knowing there is a slim chance of them ever being free again.
Once more this act started by Senator Kelly caused mutants to rise up, but the fear of being locked away quickly silenced them. Neverland was fast becoming a place to be feared for mutants, and by the time that Dr. Robert Windsor became a staff member, it was too late to reverse that damage. Mister Sinister in disguise, Dr. Windsor took full advantage of his resources now open to him. Being the brilliant geneticist that he was, he began to conduct experiments on the mutants there, hoping to further his goal of global domination, soon to be universal domination.
Where were the X-Men you might ask? Magneto? All those who played a vital role in the mutant registration act being formed? They were silenced like the rest of the world. Magneto, though an activist for the mistreatment of others based on prejudice, understood that he could either help the mutants in Neverland, or help millions more through Genosha. Genosha, under Magneto’s sovereign rule, became a safe-haven for mutants. A place where mutants fled to, either out of fear, or out of rebellion against the registration act. On Genosha, Magneto took care of mutants and offered them a better life. In return, Magneto, recognizing himself as an aged man, was given the opportunity to retire his terrorist ways in lieu of helping mutants escape persecution and confinement.
The X-Men however went a very different route. With so many members, each with their own ideas, the X-Men went their separate ways, finding no reason to stay together if they could no longer use their powers outside of the mansion. Many of them complied and registered, then proceeded to live normal lives. Others left the United States, some going to Genosha. Professor Charles Xavier was one of those mutants, leaving his institute in capable hands as he joined his old friend Magneto in helping refugees from all over the world. As well, Charles has acknowledged his own age, stepping back to allow for the younger generations to think for themselves. Though Charles and Magneto are never out of reach for advice if needed.
Scott Summers has taken the role of Headmaster at Xavier’s Institute for Higher Learning, and teaches new students how to live with their mutations while complying with the new act. However,
